New Colors of Senyo's Ice Dub and New Senyo's Shaggy Dub From HareLine Dubbin Inc. At A Fly Shop Near You!

Senyo's Shaggy Dub is a spandex micro hair material with similar properties to rubber. The major difference is Shaggy Dub is UV resistant and will not break down, crack, deteriorate, rot, and become unusable like straight rubber after being exposed to the elements and sun light.

Shaggy Dub is also cut long so that it can be utilized by tyers for everything from small nymphs to extremely large streamers. The movement of this material brings your flies to life, and the faintest motion or water current creates an "Alive" motion to the fly pattern.

Offered in 12 colors it can be effectively introduced/blended to your favorite dubbings/furs or used straight to build increased motion to your fly patterns. Here are few pictures of Steelhead fly patterns that use Shaggy Dubbing and currently are used for Great Lakes Steelhead, Salmon, and Trout.

Hare Line Dubbin Inc. also released 12 hot new colors of Senyo's Laser Dub. New tying tutorials will be up shortly incorporating these new materials and colors on our steelhead alley fly tying blog. (http://www.steelheadalleyflytying.blogspot.com/) If you like to tie flies you will definitely find these new products and colors useful.

New colors of laser dubbing and hot new colors of Hare Line
rabbit zonker strips are available at a shop near you.

On a fishing note the spring small mouth bite on Lake Erie and its Tributaries have been decent so far. Currently most if not all Tributaries in Ohio are still high and are rising due to rain. Elk Creek and Presque Isle Bay on the Pennsylvania section of the alley have been fishing extremely well and have been your best bet for great small mouth action on the fly. Here are a few pics from fly fishing Mgr. Jim Lampros over at our Orvis Cleveland Store from an outing on Presque Isle Bay.

If you would like to spend the day fishing on Presque Isle; Steve Brugger Captain/guide/owner of the Lake Erie Ultimate Angler is a master of the Lake Erie small mouth game and knows the Bay like very few others. Check out his availability and trip info at http://www.shopultimateangler.com/ the fishing is really heating up!

Alot of great summer deals going on right now through the Orvis Company and affiliated shops! Here's a funny video sent to me from good friend, fishing pal, and fly guru Shawn Brillon that was shot by the Orvis gang recently...

Nothing Small About These Mouths

THEY'RE EVERYWHERE! What you ask? Smallmouth my friend! At this point in our season, the fish are literally everywhere you look! If you are looking for some late spring Smallmouth bass action, now is the time.

Recently I had the opportunity to spend some time with a great client and friend named Tim. Tim has fished the Alley in the good and bad...and now we can say on a moderate day too.

When we arrived on the creek, we did so with great anticipation. Tim and I have been trying to get him up here for Smallmouth for several years and today was the day. Tim is an avid warm water guy! He loves his Bass and Muskie! Today we were hoping to get him into some world class Smallmouth on Steelhead Alley.

A BEAUTIFUL SHADE OF BRONZE ON THE ALLEY

The day started out as I thought it would with a ton on fish barely visible in low light conditions. Several shots at fish came and went without any successful hook-ups....but no big deal I thought. Little did I know that as the sun came up, I would see the vast majority of fish sitting on nests. This isn' t the first time I have seen this, and as soon as I did I took a deep breath knowing that the fish were going to be as tough to get as they ever are.

Do you ever hate when you are right? Well, unfortunately I was right and most fish didn't want anything to do with anything....and I mean anything. Big, small, black, white, chartreuse, crayfish, lizard, minnow, leech....it didn't matter. As Tim put it, the males tending the nests were all sitting in chairs having a smoke after having paired up with all the hefty females that in recent days had laid their payloads of eggs and headed back to the lake.

Nevertheless, we didn't give up! I mean with hundreds of fish, some of them had to be willing to play. So, we kept at it....Tim kept at it and put his fishing prowess to the test. No, we didn't catch banner numbers, but we were a long way from a shut out too.

TIM POSES WITH A NICE ERIE SMALLMOUTH WHILE
FISHING WITH GUIDE PATRICK ROBINSON

I'm looking forward to the next couple of weeks as all of those males come off nests and strap on the feed bag again! That will be a fun day to be on the water.

If you are interested in some Smallies on the fly, now is the time and the fish are filthy thick. Give us a shout and we will do the rest!

Couple Of Good Days On The Alley!

The recent rains have kept all the area rivers in some what decent shape. I really wish we would have seen the majority of this months rain in April, but you can't get everything you want all the time. Both Will Turek and Brett McCrae had the pleasure of guiding this week for Lake Erie Smallmouth Bass, with good results in both Ohio and Pennsylvania. There are good numbers of Smallmouth Bass in the tributaries, but at times you really have to work for them. Minnow imitations were the best option for the guys this week.

We will be out and about through the next couple of weeks with Erie Smallmouth trips, and outings at the Mertensia Springs Trout & Conservation Club. A special thank you to the gang over at the Angler's X-stream in Parkersburg, WV! http://www.anglersxstream.com/ I really enjoyed the time and appreciate being invited to the 10 year anniversary celebration of such a great fly shop. To everyone in attendance thanks for coming and I hope you enjoyed the switch rod presentation, casting, trout seminars and fly tying!

We'll have more for you soon!

Got Flies? New Tutorial Up, Tons More To Come...

Want to build yourself a dirty box
of streamers to swing for steel this fall?

I don't know about you, but I am pretty freak'in excited about a few fat Lake Erie Small Mouth Bass on big flies this month! Not only that but having the opportunity to play with a bunch of brand new materials and fly designs doesn't sound half bad either! Just the thought gets me pretty rowdy...Go figure?

Now that the steelhead season has finally finished, we will be ramping up our fly tying tutorial blogs with tons of great new streamer patterns to swing and strip this coming fall! Many of you who have contacted us wanted to see new sculpin and goby patterns, and I am a firm believer in "Ask and you shall receive." Now, I will not be able to have all these patterns for sale, but I promise to have good step-by-step instructions and pictures up for each one. What's fair is fair right?

Senyo's That's So 70's Sculpin
Step by Step Tutorial will be up this month!

Senyo's That's So 70's Sculpin
Other Side View

Those who asked, wanted something fun, crazy, new, and a lot of motion in the ocean! It also had to be patterns targeting bass, steelhead, and salmon. Here's the great news! This is only 1 of 12 different sculpin/streamer bad boys that will be posted on our tying blog this summer! So you can build a mean and dirty box of bugs of your very own, just in time for the fall runs of Great Lakes Steel and Salmon.

Thank you all for such encouraging feed back on all our designs, tyers, and tutorials! It makes it all extremely worth while for everyone involved... Happy tying this summer, and may your fingers cramp!

Smallies are calling...Gotta go!

It's That Time Of Year!

The Lake Erie Tributaries are still fishing very well, but not for steelhead! Large Lake Run Small Mouth Bass are here and willing to take a fly... If you are interested in learning and fishing for Small Mouth Bass we can help you out. Very few angler's take advantage of Lake Erie's Trophy Bass Fishery. These fish take hard, fight hard, and are a worthy adversary on the fly rod.

While Targeting Small Mouth Bass, JP hit this late season Ohio Steelhead!

Here is a little bit of information on the services offered, if you are interested in a day of fly fishing on Lake Erie Tributaries for Small Mouth Bass.

These trips can be booked with us directly.

We are staying pretty busy right now offering fly casting and tying lessons, and traveling to several really great fly shops for seminars. SAO Guides John Miller and Scott McClintock are reporting great fishing right now out on the West Branch of the Delaware for big Brown Trout. If you are interested in a day of serious dry fly action get with our friends over at the West Branch Angler (http://www.westbranchresort.com/).

The Adventures of Wild Bill and Jim "Silver Lips" Lewis....and then some!

This week, I had the good pleasure of fishing with Jim and Bill. Adventure doesn't even come close to the experience you have when you fish with these brothers. Although they are far beyond the boyhood days of life, you can still see the happy go lucky, poke fun, razzing each other brothers of youth coming through in full fashion...and let me tell you that it is a spectacle worth seeing and experiencing.

I was blessed to fish with these brothers over the course of a couple of days and can tell you that the time we shared, the stories told, the fish of yesteryear recounted, it was all a pleasure. And what was even better than that was the opportunity to put yet another angler on his first steelhead ever.

Jim had been to Oregon the year before, but Wild Bill was a bit hesitant in going.....Jim "Silver Lips" Lewis (more on this later), would tell you he was just making excuses. At any rate, Jim had his first couple of Steelhead in the bag, but for Bill, it was a first time experience. I am happy to say that it didn't take us any longer than about 30 minutes to get the first fish out of a nice bucket and into the net. Needless to say....Bill just got his label "Wild Bill," because he was now wildly in love with the power of these fish.

Bill holds his first Steelhead of his fishing career with
his big brother Jim looking on with pride!

Now that Bill had his first Steelhead, Jim didn't give a rip whether he caught another one or not...the brotherly love, brotherly deed, whatever you want to call it, had been done. He had allowed his brother to catch the first fish, but now, all bets were on! And I am serious! The bets were many....biggest fish, the most fish....we even had certain holes that became dinner holes....you know, biggest fish out of this hole gets dinner free kind of thing. It was a riot.

So, without hesitation, Jim stepped into the hole! He darn near Erie shuffled his own brother, and came out smiling as if to say touche....

Jim with his first fish of the day and his "bring
it on smile" to go along with it

Back and forth these two brothers went....a fish here, another there. We hopped, skipped and jumped to find the fish in holes and cuts and managaed to avoid all of the nasty dark fish that were beat up on gravel and redds. These guys were hard at work and their rewards reflected it.

Bill with a buck found resting in a deep bucket. He took
on the first presentation and never looked back.....
neither did Bill for that matter.

Just moments later, Bill strikes again, finding another couple of targets laying in a deep cut. A fish on, a fish off.....keep at it Bill and viola, another nice silver male in the bag!

A nice silver buck in the hand is always a welcome gift.

Bill was getting wilder by the minute, but Jim was not going
to stand for that....not today or any day....right Jim?

The day continued on and we traversed different stretches of river looking for prime targets. Jim warned me early that he has a tendency to set the hook hard....All I can say is that I humbly agree. So not to belabor the story, let's just say that he quickly got the nickname "silver lips," because we were sure that by the end of the day we would see a set of silver lips on the end of his line. In his defense though, we never did see those lips. In fact, by the end of the couple days we had together, I think we got him perfectly prepared for his big moment on day three...right Jim?

Jim with a beautiful little hen. She had amazing color that was
hard to capture on film due to high sun, but we did manage
to get a bit of the true color and leopard patterning in the photo below

A beautiful little girl that came out to play

Day two was much the same as the first. Fish on, fish off, fish in the net, photos, more bets than you could possibly imagine and fun for all involved!

Bill's taking the photo. I wonder what his plans were for
that photo? I won't tell you about the exchange that happened
after this....Oh, and I got it on film : )

Jim with another nice silver hen that hammered in a deep slot

Jim revives the fish and makes a successful release

Day three, it was SAO guide Greg Senyo on the job and a job well done my friend! Jim tells me that I prepared him well and I think Greg was happy I did so. Nevertheless, Greg did a good job of finding this fish in a hole that developed this spring at ice out....you have to love new holes! The three of them smile over this monster fish....who can't smile at so many pounds of fresh fish?

On top of all the fun we had with the bigger than life boys from Texas, we had a lot of other folks out the end of the week as well with other SAO guides. Here are a few photos from their time on the water.

Marty came all the way from Colorado for Steelhead.

The day was tough with relatively little water available to fish due to low water, clearing water, and every angler crammed into the areas holding fish. However, we did get fish to the net in decent numbers regardless of the challenges.

Chip bangs a big buck for the day!

SAO guide Scott McClintock was out with Marty who, as I stated
earlier, came all the way from Colorado for his first
Steelhead....a couple of minutes after sun up isn't to bad!
Way to get the skunk off Marty!

Here is another nice video put together by SAO guide Ben Barger of some of his clients from last week. It is always nice to see the action in rolling film. Thanks Ben for going above and beyond and everyone else, enjoy the fruits of his labors!

Check out this nice video compilation!

It was nice to have the Reilly's back with us this spring after a stellar day on the water in the fall! Tom and Cindy did so good with SAO guide John Clouser that they left the water early proclaiming the day couldn't have been better. Way to go John and congrats Tom and Cindy!

Cindy with a nice buck on a colder than usual April day!

Tom hammered a heavily kyped buck to seal the day!

Another client who was out lately was Victor. Victor spent a day with SAO guide John Bowling and had a great day as well!

Another nice hen slammed the flies in a great hole!

John stayed busy all week long and we are happy to say that so did his clients. John, from Cleveland, has been a long standing client who brings his own clientele to enjoy one of his pleasures in life....steelhead on the fly.

Bill below was a first time steelheader and had this to say. "This was by far my best day of fishing....ever!" Way to go Bill and thanks John for bringing another client to enjoy this resource with!

The week was unbelievably busy, but very good to us. We are still hoping for more precipitation in order to bring the flows up, but it's not looking good. The next forecasted rain isn't until late next week which means this week could be very challenging!

We are out every day across the alley with clients and will report back to you with what we find! In the meantime if you need anything, don't hesitate to give us a shout. Also, the smallmouth are in! If you are wanting to give it a shot, the coming weeks are going to be stellar fishing and we will be there if you want to go for a day.

Crazy Weather, Crazy Fish, Our Life

Well, today was what you can only be called true steelhead weather. A couple days ago we had high blue skies and temperatures in the 70's and 80's. Today was an all together different story!!! I awoke plenty early, checked the stream gauges, and prepared to hit the streams one more time. However, one last thing needed to be checked....the weather. I saw the current temps in the mid thirties and a forecast for snow and thought to myself...ARE YOU SERIOUS? We needed the rain, we needed the cold weather to prolong the season, but snow in April? Something just isn't right about that....especially after several days of temps in the 80's. Well, whatever the weather forecast, I had clients lined up and planning for my arrival in a little over an hour....so off I went. We knew that the day would be challenging on the eastern end of the alley due to water levels rising and falling, and more so because of how fish can and will react to these kind of fronts! Nevertheless, we are fisherman and that means we go fishing right? Well, you be the judge....

buck was a part of it

Joe with a nice and aggressive dropback hen.
One thing we have been seeing a whole lot of lately are early Smallmouth Bass. With the early warm temps in the region, we have already been dealing with water temps in the mid 60's which has brought in a good number of early season Smallmouth. If you are interested in some world class Smallmouth action, we are booking trips for May and June. Call us at 888-453-5899 or email us at team@steelheadalleyoutfitters.com.
Adam with a very nice Smallmouth early in the season.
We had a great group of clients on a number of streams today, and for some, it was there first time steelheading. Such was the case for this father and son trio in from North Carolina. The weather was a bit colder than they were used to, but they stayed with the game all day and it paid off.
Caleb with the first Steelhead of his career.
Late in the day, Kim managed to nail a nice, bright hen that was just starting to drop her eggs. She was a welcome piece of shiny silver coming out of the depths of a dark hole!

Steelhead....and a trophy at that!
This monster hen was a blessing at the end of the day!
We are continuing to fish every day with multiple guides on the water every day with clients. If you want to get out, we have limited availability, but will do everything we can to get you out.
Keep the lines in the water....and you can bet that ours will be!
