Instruction by Jim Lampros Fly Fishing Manager of Orvis Cleveland and Steelhead Alley Outfitters!

Our annual steelhead fly fishing school held this October saw 6 fantastic anglers pull together and in my mind become much more complete steelheaders. Some of our guests had experienced many fly fishing firsts! First fly pattern they ever tied, first steelhead ever brought to hand, and first time experiencing our wonderful steelhead fishery! Add to all of that first class instruction,  good food, late night fly tying, and spending 2 full days together in a remote cabin over looking the stream made the weekend a fulfilling experience.

The rewards of a proper introduction to Lake Erie Steelheading.

Our Steelhead School Home away from Home!

Preparing the cabin for the weekend activities.

SAO Guide Brett McCrae gives a talk on steelhead fly selection.

Teaching the group how to read water and locate fall Lake Erie Steelhead.

Orvis Cleveland Fly Fishing Manager and Steelhead School Instructor Jim Lampros is all smiles after this fish was brought to hand!

If only we could get Victor to spot birds as well as he does steelhead?

Another successful hook up...

Greg burns the midnight oil and demonstrates a few bugs for tomorrows outing. The great thing about the session was all anglers were successful in tying their own patterns.

Greg talks about Lake Erie steelhead food sources and how to imitate them.

Pat lands his first steelhead ever with the help and instruction from SAO Guide Brett McCrae!

At this point I do not know which guy is happier!

A Description Of The Event And Contact Information Is Also Listed Below! Space Is Limited So Contact Jim Lampros And Get RSVP'ed As Soon As Possible!

Lake Erie offers nearly 8 months of the best Steelhead fly fishing on the planet! This two day Steelhead school will have an emphasis on learning and perfecting fly fishing techniques. You will get a refreshing look into the evolution of our Steelhead fishery, and understand where and how to find fish during our 3 seasons. Everything from essential steelhead gear, hot flies, single hand casting, and switch rods, to sink tips and poly leaders will be thoroughly discussed and demonstrated.

You will also be stream side both days practicing and perfecting the subjects and techniques listed above, along with hooking, playing, landing, and releasing your catch!

Two days of classroom instruction, guided stream side instruction, and lodging! All aspects of fly fishing for Lake Erie Steelhead will be covered! This is not a basic introduction, or vehicle tour of public access points, served with a slice of pizza! If you are serious about becoming a complete steelhead angler this school if for you!

This is just one of several schools that will be offered during the course of our Fall, Spring, and Winter steelhead seasons... Discounted gear and specials are available through Orvis Cleveland to all Steelhead school participants.

 WARM-WATER FLY FISHING SCHOOL

While the southern shore of Lake Erie has gained a well-deserved reputation in recent years for its exceptional steelhead fishery, it also offers extremely exciting & diverse warm-water fishing. From river-resident fish such as smallmouth bass, carp, & musky to lake fishing for largemouth bass & panfish, the opportunities are endless. Takes are often visual, fish are aggressive & plentiful, and best of all this fishing is easily accessible if you look in the right places.

This school is intended to introduce you to the variety of species you may choose to pursue locally during the months of May through September. From sight fishing to flats-feeding carp (often in the 20 lb. class) to stripping poppers for bass, to coveting the elusive musky on a fly, we’ll cover it all. Students are encouraged to arrive on Friday evening, with the school beginning at 9:00 AM the following day. Saturday and Sunday will be split between a half-day of classroom instruction and a half-day of guided fishing. Classroom instruction will cover basic technique, species identification, fly selection, equipment selection and much more. Our guided fishing experience will focus on honing these newly learned skills while targeting resident and lake-run smallmouth bass. Late May offers perhaps the best opportunity to take a 5+ pound smallmouth on a fly, and we will be minutes from some very productive water!

We will be hosting the school at the Liars Den Lodge in East Springfield, PA, just minutes from lower Elk Creek and the Lake Erie shore. The lodge provides a great environment for classroom work and easy access to a variety of waters. The school will be limited to 8 students. The cost of the school is $470 and includes instructor and guide fees (gratuity optional), use of rod and reel as well as leader/tippet/flies during guided fishing, breakfast, lunch & snacks both days. Depending on water temperatures, wet-wading could be an option, but students should have their own waders & appropriate fishing licenses, and are encouraged to bring their own rod and reel if they choose. Also, Students will receive 10% off of any gear purchased at the store!
