Jet Lagged Confessions - Alaska Style - Part 2

Alright....the next confession in this blog series is that I love the colors of Alaska.  From the sky to the water to the tundra and the trees, the state of Alaska has some really cool colors.

I have been privileged to see some really spectacular sunrises and sunsets in my time, but Alaska seems to take the cake for the most breathtaking of them all!  This photo is one I snapped at daybreak and other than cropping it, did nothing to edit it for this blog....Simply amazing colors are seen regularly!

The view from my front porch looking out across the Naknek River.

The other confession I have is one my good friend Greg would wholeheartedly agree with and that is that I have a fly fishing love affair with Char....not just Arctic Char either.  I just absolutely love Char  and love chasing them wherever they can be found!

Although I didn't spend time this year getting really good photos, we did get some that bring back some great memories.  I did get a bit of video with my GoPro too, but don't have the time to edit it down right now, so the photos will have to do.

Jim and brother Bill show a beautiful Char on their return trip to Alaska

An Alaskan Char ninja sighted on the Ugashik Narrows.

Ken holds a colored up Char at the Narrows.

SAO guide Ben Barger cherishes a moment with his father Jim as a beautiful Arctic Char graces their presence.

Ben Barger and Hunter Johnson take time for a snapshot.

Ken holds a really nicely kyped Arctic Char on a jewel of a creek.

In closing I must confess that yes, there is more video, but you will need a bit of time to watch this clip as it is around 12 minutes in length.  While it isn't a total Char piece, it does have the prettiest Char I have ever photographed or filmed without a doubt!  Again, this is an excerpt from the full length piece we edited down from last year's trip, so enjoy!

Jet Lagged Confessions - Alaska Style - Part 1

Just a few short days ago, I returned from one of my favorite places on earth...that being the great state of Alaska.  My first confession has to be that I absolutely love that place.  I think I could spend the rest of my days traveling to that place and always find something new to do.  This was my third trip hosting anglers to this majestic place and yet again, I found plenty of new adventure in this awesome place.  For many others it was all brand new and so were some of the smiles!  Here are a few of the big Alaska Rainbows caught on the Naknek River.

Bill Lewis and guide Kyle show off a decent Rainbow on the Naknek

Jim Barger and guide Wes show off the big Bow of day one at Naknek River Camp

Leif Birnbaum holds a healthy Naknek Rainbow....one of many!

Host and SAO guide Ben Barger shows off what would be
considered an average size trophy fish for the fall fishery on the Naknek River.

Ken Fugate holds a slob of a Bow on the the mighty Naknek

My second confession is that I have been sitting on a lot of great film from our trip to Alaska last year.  I have been sitting on it because we had thoughts of putting something in the Fly Fishing Film Tour for the coming year, but sometimes the best of plans just need to wait for another season.  That being the case, I thought now would be as good a time as any to start breaking down some of the footage and sharing it with all of you.  So, here is the trailer we put together for the film that we shot last year entitled Tight Lines & Tundra.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it!

Until my next confession, tight lines!

All In The Family

Each year I have the opportunity to take a lot of people fishing and often times get to share with them the experience of a first Steelhead on the fly. That is always a great experience no matter how long you may have known the angler standing alongside you. However, there is one "first time" experience that trumps all others, whether you are a guide or not, and that is when you get to experience it with your own family.

Going back a few years ago to 2009, I had a brief window of opportunity and an 8 year old son who was chomping at the bit to do what Dad does. It just happened to be March 22nd which is my birthday and I thought, "No better way to spend the day than teaching my son to fly fish!" We only had three hours to get done what I hoped to accomplish, so we hit the road. One hour of casting instruction and one hour of fishing is all that we had with travel time, so we crossed our fingers, said a prayer, and hit the water. With numerous hook-ups, many lost fish, and yes, even some tears from a disappointed 8 year old, the final fish came to the net with the splendor and majesty that only a father can understand. The moment the fish hit the net you could hear the shouts and jubilation from a mile away I'm sure, but I didn't care. It was my son, on my birthday, and I had never had a better one!

Patrick's son with his first fish on a fly rod...
and a Steelhead to boot!

He was as proud as they come and so was Dad!

Fast forward a year, and I had a good shot at getting my oldest daughter out. We hit the stream and conditions were right, but our good fortune wasn't as good this time around. With seven hook-ups came seven lessons in what not to do while fighting a Steelhead...we've all been there. Yes, we left the stream that day a bit disappointed, but this was a good day by any definition, because I had my daughter on the stream.

Fast forward one more year to the fall of 2011 and it was back on the stream this time with my oldest son and daughter. It was amazing how well my daughter did this day given the fact that it had been a full year since her last trip. We stepped into the hole and I put her in the sweet spot. It didn't take any time and she was making beautiful casts and picture perfect drifts...then it happened. The indicator stopped, she set the hook up stream (yes I said up stream), the fish surfaced, the head flopped side to side, the hook pulled, and she looked at me. I smiled and said, "what did you do wrong?" And to my amazement she said, I set the hook up stream. I was amazed and excited all at once. My soon to be teenager DOES LISTEN....woohooo....LOL....Oh, back to the story. I couldn't believe she had retained that small piece of information and analyzed her mistake so quickly.

With a bit of pride in my heart, I said, "OK, then just don't do that again!" Two drifts later, she had made a perfect cast, a great mend, and the indicator dropped again. This time she came up with a great hook set in the downstream motion and stuck that fish hard. Immediately the fish raced upstream and I was afraid to look at what she may do with the rod and the line and, and, and, I WAS AMAZED. I don't know what happened, but she acted as if she had caught 1,000 fish, because none of her previous years mistakes ever showed themselves this time around. She set right, cleared the line like a pro, kept her hand off the reel unless she was actually gaining line, and then that second "proud Papa" moment happened. I exclaimed, "raise the rod to turn that head up," and she followed the order with precision. I waited for that head to rise so that I could make a good stick, and stick him I did.

I wondered how enthusiastic her response would be. Would it be like my sons had been? Probably not I thought....she's a girl (reasoning in my mind that she's probably here more for me than her) and....well, I was wrong and extremely happy to be. When I came up with the fish, she let out a hoot that put a smile on everyone's face that day. In fact I'm smiling now just thinking about it!

What a beauty...and the fish isn't half bad either!

Dad thought he would push the envelope to see just
how much of a flygal she would be and said, "You have
to kiss your first fish." I was amazed when she put this
lip-lock on the fish. That's alright with me...but I'll shoot
any guy who tries for the same...LOL

Once again, fast forward about 4 months...it's now March of 2012. I am laying in bed one night when my wife comes straggling to bed extremely late. She was out with friends that night and came rolling in about 3am just as I awoke, needing to make a last minute call to clients before they left Columbus because of some overnight storms. As my wife crawled in bed, she said, "I have spring break next week, what do you think the chances are of you taking me fly fishing?" WHAT? I had to roll over and check to make sure my wife was actually the one in bed with me! "Seriously," I asked. I stumbled in my words totally taken back by the question and quickly realized that the following Thursday was, you bet, my birthday. Good old March 22nd. It had been golden three years earlier with my son...could it happen twice? I didn't know, but was very willing to give it a shot.

The big day came and I got the lunches packed for a picnic with the wife on the river and we headed out the door. My wife enjoys fishing (but had never fly fished), LOVES the sun, and proclaims the same for me. This was definitely a day of Steelheading that appealed to her because it was sunny and 75-80 degrees. I didn't care what the conditions were...it could have been any condition as far as I was concerned! I was just elated to have my wife on the river with me!

It didn't take long to get the rod in her hand and teach her some basics on casting. She was a bit reluctant at times, but I gave her some space to let her work out the kinks and build her confidence and would then come in with some pointers which she took very well. Not long into the day she hooked her first fish and made the common one handed grab of the rod and line together and as always I watched the rod drop sharply and "Ping"....bye, bye fish!

She was really amazed at the power of that fish and immediately questioned her ability to get the job done. I quickly affirmed her ability and told her she didn't need to be anxious, but to just keep the rod up at all times and the line simply "under control"...no need for death grips here. She settled in and within a half hour that glory moment came. The fish ran her around, up and down if went as I shouted out instruction on what to do and what not to do. Soon I was moving in, net in hand, to see if my birthday blessing would happen twice. Within seconds, it was sealed....I may now have one of the best sets of birthday memories a fly fisher could ever ask for!

My wife and the catch of my life, holds her
first Steelhead and her first fish on a fly rod!

I think I could get used to having this one as my
partner on the stream more often!

Needless to say, I am a blessed man. We now number 4 steelheaders in the family and my two youngest are begging every day for their shot at it. Soon, I hope, we will be a steelheading family and my dream collage of pictures for the wall will be complete. I look forward to the day I can hang that frame on the wall. It will most certainly be a trophy of a lifetime!

A Little Snow Doesn't Hurt, But Watch Out for the Egg McMuffins...

This past weekend we had the opportunity to hook up with a few of our friends from "O-Show" HQ in Vermont. Guys were driving and flying in from all over the region to catch a few Lake Erie Steelhead and to catch up with old friends. Severe weather, icy conditions, and snow storms made the travel slow going from the start, but we all managed to arrive in one piece and in good spirits.

Now here is the part where it gets good or should I say bad? Everyone headed out on the rivers and had a good time, caught a few decent fish, shared a few laughs, and overall had a pretty good day on the river. After the day was done, we headed over to a local bar and grill for some serious grub  It was about that time that I started to feel like I just got knocked out by Chuck Liddell. I couldn't even look at my wings and rings, and I was drinking fluids like I had been stranded in the desert for 7 days. I started sweating to death and shivering at the same time...been there?  I was thinking what the hell is wrong with me?

I decided to excuse myself and headed into the nearest emergency room. After a few minutes the doctor stepped in.  I didn't waste any time describing my symptoms to him.  In a split second, he looked at me and saed that I most likely had food poisoning. I told him I had not eaten anything since nearly 4am with the exception of some beef jerky while on the river. So after a few quick tests, my doctor came walking in with a smile on his face and says he found the problem.  Apparently I had eaten food or put something in my mouth that was contaminated with a bacteria, and it was growing and infecting my stomach. In dumb terms he tells me that someone took a dump, didn't wash their hands, and prepared my food!

So I spent the rest of the weekend wishing I was not alive after drinking the nastiest half gallon of antibiotic laxative and sleeping on a cold tile floor.  Friggin' Egg MacMuffins!!!  As you can see from the pictures and video below it was a fun time had by most everyone but me.  So, wash your hands....somebody's good time may depend on it.

Some of the SAO guys talk with the boys from Orvis

While on the water, Pat also had a chance to pull the camera out and get some footage for the "O-Show" crew to help them highlight some new gear that is pulling down some really good reviews.  The weekend may have been cold, but with friends, fish, and some film, the weekend warmed and everyone had a blast.  We are already looking forward to another outing.

Orvis Company's new boot foot that is getting rave reviews across the country.

In closing, don't forget to check out our fly specials in the fly shop...we can get these out just in time for that special person you want to impress this Christmas.

Also, conditions are changing quick, but some fish are still available.  We are watching the conditions daily and getting out with clients when conditions warrant.  If you are a die hard fly fisher who wants to experience Steelheading in late season, let us know.

Looking forward to next year, minus the Egg MacMuffins....

The Adventures of Flybum - Part 7

The last time I wrote, I promised we would head upstream on the Teton in my next blog. Well, I'm keeping my promise although it has been a number of days since my last entry. The delay in getting you up river was due to the fact that I wanted to do so through the avenue of video. So, I make my return in this western adventure series with another Flybum Media short.

This section of river will be forever burned in my memory for a couple of reasons. The first being that it was the first time I had ever come across a mountain lion den (yeah, I was standing right in front of it before I realized it...pretty daunting really), second because that is where I lost the biggest fish of the day, and last but not least, it was the place where I caught my first Rattlesnake....Oh Yeah....It was a rush! You'll see more of this in the video.

Until then, here are a few more photos of fish that we caught on our day on the Teton.

SAO GUIDE BEN BARGER WITH A HEALTHY
YELLOWSTONE CUTTHROAT

SAO GUIDE PATRICK ROBINSON HOLDING
A NICE CUTTHROAT OF HIS OWN

Toward the end of our day, we headed back downstream to a confluence and decided to fish it up. It was a great piece of water! I only wish we had more sunlight so we could have explored it further up.

AN AWESOME FIGHTING FISH IN FAST
WATER ON A 5WT!

As we fished upstream in the last few minutes of light in the canyon, yet another first presented itself, and I wasn't gonna pass this one up. Some call it a bit crazy....some completely insane. I call it cool and living on the edge : )

Below is a photo of the Rattlesnake I noticed trying to climb the vertical rock face in the background of the photo above. I noticed him swimming along the wall and then he disappeared into the only crevice for quite some distance. I hollered out to Ben, "Rattlesnake" and pointed across the river. He said, "How do you know?" I said, "Just trust me, I know my snakes" and headed off for the other side of the river to see if I could get a look at him. The following photo is all I could take considering I had left all cameras but my iPhone downstream. It was the end of the day, the sunlight was disappearing and so we decided to wrap up the filming for the day....ughhh. Always happens when you need the camera(s).

FIRST RATTLESNAKE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN
THE WILD IN ALL HIS GLORY! TRULY AN AMAZINGLY
BEAUTIFUL REPTILE. I GUESS YOU HAVE TO APPRECIATE
SNAKES TO AGREE WITH ME ON THIS.

Wow, that was really cool to see! However, I always wanted to catch a poisonous snake and here was my opportunity and a good one at that. Please keep in mind that I don't advise this. I spent a large part of my childhood catching snakes, learning about snakes, visiting serpatoriums, and educating myself on what makes snakes tick. That being said, this was the best opportunity one could have. Snakes are cold blooded reptiles which means they rely on the warmth of the sun to increase their metabolism. That means if they are cold, they move slow, if they are hot, they are lighting fast. This snake had just come out of 55-60 degree water, had been in the shade, was climbing straight vertical, and could not achieve a coiled position if he tried which is the position they need to be in for an optimum defense/strike posture. So, his ability to defend himself was extremely limited and his metabolism was very slow due to being in the water (and this was proven in the fact that he could barely shake his rattle). So, again, please understand that I know what I am doing, read all the available signs, and proceeded knowing the inherent risks.

So, with a little encouragement from my friend Ben, it was on! Just a minute later, I was proudly in control of one mean looking set of teeth! But to be quite honest, and I hate to say it, because it takes the "macho" out of the story.....this could very possibly have been one of the easiest snakes I have ever caught.

PATRICK SMILES WITH HIS FIRST
RATTLESNAKE IN HAND

THE BUSINESS END AND A BEAUTIFUL
RATTLE ADORNED THIS AWESOME SNAKE!

So, without further delay, here is the latest film I worked on. I wish I had more to offer, but when you are torn between filming and fishing, sometimes you come up short on the footage you really would have liked. Regardless of what I didn't get, it turned out decent in the end and will always be on my shelf as a part of "The Adventures of Flybum - Volume 2." Also please note that in the flick, some censoring has been done to protect names of those who shared information and also to protect the names of specific locations. I think we all understand that YouTube videos and blogs on the world wide web can be a place that puts a lot of unneeded pressure on some of our favorite haunts. Therefore, for conservation reasons as well as the need to respect the wishes of others who so selflessly helped me build a successful trip, I have added the censors early in the flick. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I did fishing it, filming it, and editing it down.

Next time, we will take a trip across the Teton divide and check out a brief stint on a tributary to the Snake River in the area of Jackson, Wyoming....home of Snake River Fine Spots!

Until then,

A New Year Started Off Right!

Well, it is 2010 already and all I can say is WOW! If the rest of the year goes as fast as the first two weeks, it won't be long before we are watching another ball drop and wondering if we did anything of value with our lives in the last year.

For SAO, 2009 was a banner year! More bookings than ever! More destinations than ever! And a new and improved SAO now in partnership with many shops across the region. 2009 also brought the start of another company that works in close partnership with SAO and that is Flybum Media Productions. Together, SAO/FMP is accomplishing some cool things....however 2010 is sure to be a blowout year in what we have planned to do.

In 2010, we already have trips booked up for a return to Alaska and our steelhead bookings are already into 2011. If you are interested in fishing with us, don't hesitate to call in advance to get the best dates. Also, if you are interested in Alaska 2011, we are headed back and taking deposits now.

The year has already got off to a great start with our show season under way. The first show for us this year was the 3rd Annual, Indiana On The Fly show in Indianapolis, IN. It was a great show with many great names in the industry in attendance.

I was fortunate enough to be invited as one of just a few presenters at the show, and so, I gave it everything I had....well, almost. It was nice to have such a packed house for a presentation...for those in attendance, you made it a blast!

As a part of the presentation, I had promised the founder of the show a brand new, hot off the press, highlight video of Steelhead Alley. I was pressed for time, but got the job done and I think we came off with a pretty nice finished product.....at least that is what I got for feedback.

So, looking to 2010, we are excited! Oh, and if you aren't excited about 2010, check out this highlight of 2009.....perhaps it will get your excitement going again.

(Click "Steelhead Gone Wild" below to see in wide screen)

Until next time, keep your eyes on the vise and fill your boxes.....or just get to the computer and edit some warmer season video. Regardless, enjoy the season and we will see you soon at a show near you!

Heat and Serve!

In this day and age, we like things fast....we like things hot. That is why we have microwaves and slogans like, "Your way right away.

Well, todays steelheading was what I like to call heat and serve. They were smokin' hot and ready to serve, and believe me when I say they were eager to please.

For several weeks now there have been fish around as some others have said. However, we don't care to broadcast that to the masses as the pressure gets high enough on it's own. So, we have been waiting for that moment when the race is on....the moment when the rains come and set the steel free from the lower river domain to infiltrate the inland waterways. This past week it happened across the region and fish are now distributing themselves well throughout many river systems.

My partner Greg and I were on the water well before sun up this morning as we prepared to fish and shoot some film. As we stood streamside talking, you could watch fish in the low light ripping up the riffles as they wasted no time in traveling up stream. That is always a cool sight to see.

The fish caught today were HOT, HOT, HOT!!!!! Not only were they hot, but they were nicer size than we had anticipated. Check out the photographic proof below to substantiate our claims.....

GREG WITH A NICE FISH THAT PUT A HEFTY BEND IN THE ROD

THIS IS A MUG WE ALL LOVE.....THE FISH THAT IS : )

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT SHOT TO KEEP THINGS FRESH!

THE STEELHEAD ARE BACK AND WE ARE READY!

Like most every trip out, today was an opportunity to try some new fly patterns that we have been tying up. However, the steelhead sensation (as others called it last year) did find it's way to our lines at times.....it's the newer hot tube fly known as the "Ice Man Minnow Tube." It banged numerous fish today and continues to prove itself a deadly part of the SAO arsenal! Oh, and there are new ones close to debut soon enough!

AN ICE MAN MINNOW IS HAMMERED BY CHROME!

The largest fish of the day didn't get photographed. Yeah, I can hear you all now......but wait a second before you start busting me with the whole "Sure you did" stuff. We didn't photograph it.....however we did film it in high def!!!! Sorry though....you will have to wait for the film to be shown later.

Having said all that though, the following fish pulled a close second and was absolutely, as they call them in Alaska, a toad! He was big, thick, and full of sass!!! His girth was incredibly impressive. The photo below shows the fish laying in the water naturally, so that people can't say we worked the angle or pushed the fish to the camera......this was truly a big hog!!!

THIS FISH WAS A HOG.....THAT FLY FISHING FOR TROPHY!

And then comes the photo that can lead to question. However, since we already substantiated the fishes massive girth and length in the previous photo, here is a more artistic approach to capturing a cool moment.

NICE FISH GREG....HERE'S TO MANY MORE....

So, in closing, we are here to declare that Steelhead season is officially open at SAO. Although our guides have been out for weeks scouting and catching, we now know that there are enough fish distributed around to make it a fishable event for those interested.

If you are interested in coming back to fish with us, or giving it a shot for the first time, give us a shout! We still have limited availability and would love to share the water with you!

Until next time, may the early bird get the fish.......Woooohoooooo!!!! Game on!!!

New Flick On Pennsylvania Trout

A month or so back, we had the opportunity to spend some time in Pennsylvania going after brown trout that were munching on the plethora of bugs available at the time.

While there, we had the opportunity to shoot some film which is always fun. Now that the remainder of my gear is in, I have been working on getting to know the equipment better and that includes the software.

Below are just a few shots from that time in Pennsylvania. If you want to see the original blog, click here.

The trip was a blast, and we look forward to many more in the days to come. Summer is in full swing and fall runs of potamodromous fish are already being reported entering the rivers in Michigan (steelhead and kings), so it makes you wonder if our extremely cool summer could mean early steelhead for us too? Only time will tell.

Dreaming of that Past Day!

Have you ever had one of those trips that was so awesome....moving....so memorable that you find yourself longing for another shot at it.  Well, the Sierra Nevada's is one of those areas.  The fish are unbelievably beautiful!  The scenery will take your breath away!  For an adventurous fly angler, this high country experience is a must have!

I have been fortunate enough to  have been drawn to the region three times now.....yes, three times....and every trip is a very memorable time in God's creation with friends, flies, and fish.

Two years ago, we shot a lot of film while on the trail and from it came my true desire to shoot and edit films.  Upon arriving home, I began work on my new series that I entitled, "The Adventures of Flybum."  So, after many, many hours of learning how to be a better editor and finding out what shots I "should have" gotten, I finished a less than perfect volume one.  At nearly an hour in length, it was the first large scale project I had ever attempted.  It has now been shown at many fly shops across the region as we have done fly tying demos or while speaking on the greatness of the Steelhead Alley region.

That first volume is entitled "A Journey to Evolution Valley" and will always be near and dear to my heart.  Not only was it my first punch into truly high elevations, but it was my first film.

Here is a much shorter film that I reworked from footage contained in that first volume completed more than a year ago.  I hope you enjoy it...

Flybum Media Productions Formalizes

Several years ago, I became a bit enamored with video, the editing of video, and the overall coolness of being able to take a camera and tell a good story.  Over the past decade or so, I have been dabbling in the video production arena.  Years ago, I got my first "handycam" and began taking it on stream with me across the state.  Soon the camera would take trips around the country with me.  Soon thereafter, the "Adventures of Flybum" series was born....more for my enjoyment than others.

Well, there comes a point in every man's life where you have to make a decision.  Are you going to play or work.  In my case, I decided to work hard at playing :)  The choice I made was to take the play side a bit further and see if I could once again take something I love and share it while bringing in some extra cash.....can you blame me?

So, just a few weeks ago, the company became official.  No longer is Flybum Media Productions just a title thrown around in conversation and shown on my laptops screen, but it is now a legal entity that will be working it's way to a top notch film company in the months ahead.

Recently a new broadcast quality HD camera was acquired as well as many other pieces of equipment that will raise the standard of the video work we do.

You can look forward to future productions such as "The Adventures of Flybum" series, tutorial videos on fly tying and fly fishing instruction, and assorted other things as time and ingenuity meet.

Until then, enjoy this short clip I just put together from some standard definition footage we shot a month or so back while on a trip.  The video is called "The Retreat" and highlights the Brook Trout Retreat that Greg Senyo operates in the great neighboring state of Pennsylvania.  If you haven't had a chance to check this place out, you will want to do so!

I hope you enjoy the video as much as I do putting them together!

The trout season is cranking now, so you will want to get out while you can.  The magic hatches are putting smiles on faces daily across the east and midwest!  We will be back soon with more short films for your entertainment.

Until next time,
